Michael Long Senior Michael Long of the Muhlenberg football team was named to the D3football.com All-America first team.

Long, a third-team selection on the D3football.com All-America squad last year, is only the third Mule to make the elite squad twice, joining kick returner (and current assistant coach) Joshua Carter (1999-2000) and linebacker Patrick McDonough (2010-11).

The big tight end, a preseason All-America selection, also is the first Muhlenberg player to make the D3football.com All-America first team since Carter in 2000. A total of 10 Mules have combined for 12 appearances on the all-star team, which made its debut in 1999.

Long, a unanimous All-Centennial Conference first-team selection, caught 60 passes for 700 yards and 10 touchdowns. He broke the CC records for receptions by a tight end in a season (60) and career (135) while tying his own single-game mark of 11. Long tied for the CC lead with his 10 receiving touchdowns.

Among Division III tight ends, Long tied for the lead in receptions and was the only one with double figures in touchdown catches.

Long finished his career sixth on the Mules’ all-time list in career receptions and 12th in receiving yards (1,518).

The All-America team announcement was made prior to last night’s Stagg Bowl, won by Wis.-Whitewater. That gave the Mules (9-2) three degrees of separation from the national champions: They lost by one point in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Widener – a game in which Long caught 11 passes for 159 yards and two touchdowns. Widener went on to fall in the third round to Linfield, which was eliminated in the semifinals by Whitewater.
